DESCRIPTION:UPDATE -> Due to the cancellation of the session on Monday\, October 30\, the series will extend one week and have its final session on Monday. december 4\, 2023. \n\nJoin Rob Metcalf for this 10-week series of Tai Chi Monday afternoons at 3:15pm to 4:30pm\, September 11 – November 27. (Please note – there are NO CLASSES on Monday\, October 9 or Monday\, October 23 ). \nTo register or for information\, please contact Rob at taichi@fairlawnavenueunited.ca. \nThis gentle form of exercise can help maintain strength\, flexibility\, and balance.  Tai chi is often described as “meditation in motion\,” but it might well be called “medication in motion.” There is growing evidence that this mind-body practice\, which originated in China as a martial art\, has value in treating or preventing many health problems. \nYou don’t need to subscribe to or learn much about tai chi’s roots in Chinese philosophy to enjoy its health benefits\, but these concepts can help make sense of its approach: \n\nQi — an energy force thought to flow through the body; tai chi is said to unblock and encourage the proper flow of qi.\nYin and yang — opposing elements thought to make up the universe that need to be kept in harmony. Tai chi is said to promote this balance.

DESCRIPTION:Longtime Fairlawn Avenue United Church member – and in recent years Fairlawn’s oldest member! – Gwen Oakden died\, peacefully in her 106th year. \nGwen was predeceased by her husband\, Gord\, daughter\, Janet\, and son Robert\, parents Charles and Emily (Moore) Robinson\, sisters Joan Mann\, Shirley Larkin and brother Murray. She is survived by her sons\, David (Kathie)\, Jim (Karen)\, daughter\, Catherine (Les Makoldy)\, daughter-in-law Linda as well as 6 grandchildren\, and 8 great-grandchildren. \nHer funeral will be held on June 24\, at 11:00am at Fairlawn United Church\, 28 Fairlawn Ave\, Toronto. Visitation at 10:30am in the Church\, Reception to follow in the church. Interment of ashes at Mount Pleasant Cemetery afterwards. \n

DESCRIPTION:Fairlawn’s Affirm Ministry\, in partnership with International Day of Pink\, will be hosting Martin Boyce’s cross-Canada Courage to Stand Up tour on Sunday\, April 16 at 1:30pm\, his only public event in the GTA. \nWe’ll have more information in the coming weeks about registering for the event that is being held in the sanctuary. \nBoyce was a participant in 1969’s Stonewall (or\, Stonewall Riots\, Stonewall Uprising) in New York City\, a pivotal moment in queer/trans history. He remains an activist to this day. The tour is being funded by the U.S. Embassy. Boyce will be interviewed by Michael Coren\, Anglican priest\, columnist and former broadcaster. Save the date!
