Scripture  Acts 2:1-18

Prelude If Ye Love Me          E. Daley (1990)

Soprano 1 – Yvonne Way
Soprano 2 – Carrie Loring
Alto 1 – Meredith Hall
Alto 2 – Patricia Jones

If ye love me, keep my commandments,
And I will pray the Father,
And God will give to you another Comforter,
That He may abide with you forever.
Peace I leave with you.
My peace I give unto you.
Not as the world giveth, give I unto you.
Let not your heart be troubled,
Neither let it be afraid,
I will not leave you comfortless,
I will come to you and your heart shall rejoice.
Alleluia.
(John 14:15-16, 27-28)

Opening Hymn Come Down, O Love Divine

Come down, O love divine,
Seek thou this soul of mine,
And visit it with thine own ardour glowing.
O Comforter, draw near,
Within my heart appear,
And kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing.

O let it freely burn,
Till earthly passions turn
To dust and ashes in its heat consuming;
And let thy glorious light
Shine ever on my sight,
And clothe me round, the while my path illuming.

Let holy charity
Mine outward vesture be,
And lowliness become my inner clothing,
True lowliness of heart,
Which takes the humbler part,
And o’er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing.

And so the yearning strong
With which the soul will long
Shall far outpass the power of human telling;
For none can guess its grace,
Till he become the place
Wherein the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling.
(Bianco da Siena, c.1350-1434
trans. Richard F. Littledale, 1833-1890)

Anthem Gracious Spirit, Dwell with Me          K. Lee Scott (b. 1950)

Gracious Spirit, dwell with me, I would gracious be;
Help me now thy grace to see, I would be like thee;
And, with words that help and heal, thy life would mine reveal;
And with actions bold and meek, for Christ, my Saviour, speak.

Truthful Spirit, dwell with me, I would truthful be;
Help me now thy truth to see, I would be like thee;
And, with wisdom kind and clear, thy life in mine appear;
And, with actions brotherly, speak Christ’s sincerity.

Holy Spirit, dwell with me, I would holy be;
Show thy mercy tenderly, make me more like thee;
Separate from sin, I would, and cherish all things good;
And whatever I can be, give him who gave me thee.

Mighty Spirit, dwell with me, I would mighty be;
Help me now thy pow’r to see, I would be like thee;
‘Gainst all weapons hell can wield, be thou my strength and shield;
Let thy word my weapon be, Lord, Thine the victory.
Gracious Spirit, dwell with me, I would be like thee.
(Vss. 1-3, Thomas T. Lynch 1818-1871, alt., vs. 4, K.L.S.)

Hymn Come, Holy Ghost, Our Souls Inspire

Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire
And lighten with celestial fire,
Thou the anointing Spirit art,
Who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart.

Thy blessèd unction from above
Is comfort, life and fire of love;
Enable with perpetual light
The dullness of our blinded sight.

Anoint and cheer our soilèd face
With the abundance of thy grace;
Keep far our foes; give peace at home:
Where thou art guide no ill can come.

Teach us to know the Father, Son,
And thee of both to be but one,
That through the ages all along
This may be our endless song.

Praise to thy eternal merit,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
(from the Latin 9th century,
trans. John Cosin, 1594-1672)

Anthem Peace          Martin Åsander (b. 1987)

Peace I leave with you,
My peace I give unto you.
Not as the world giveth,
Give I unto you.
Let not your heart be troubled,
Neither let it be afraid.
Peace I leave with you,
My peace I give unto you.
Peace I leave with you. Amen.
(John 14:27)

Closing Hymn Gracious Spirit, Holy Ghost

Gracious Spirit, Holy Ghost,
Taught by thee, we covet most
Of thy gifts at Pentecost,
Holy, heavenly love.

Love is kind and suffers long,
Love is meek and thinks no wrong;
Love than death itself most strong;
Therefore give us love.

Prophecy will fade away,
Melting in the light of day,
Love will ever with us stay,
Therefore give us love.

Faith will vanish into sight,
Hope be emptied in delight;
Love in heaven will shine more bright,
Therefore give us love.

Faith and hope and love we see
Joining hand in hand agree;
But the greatest of the three,
And the best, is love.

From the overshadowing
Of thy gold and silver wing
Shed on us, who to thee sing,
Holy, heavenly dove.
(Christopher Wordsworth, 1862)

Postlude I’m Gonna Sing When the Spirit Says Sing          arr. Howard Helvey (b. 1968)

I’m gonna sing when the Spirit says sing,
I’m gonna sing when the Spirit says sing,
I’m gonna sing when the Spirit says sing,
And obey the Spirit of the Lord.

I’m gonna preach when the Spirit says preach,
I’m gonna preach when the Spirit says preach,
I’m gonna preach when the Spirit says preach,
And obey the Spirit of the Lord.

I’m gonna pray when the Spirit says pray,
I’m gonna pray when the Spirit says pray,
I’m gonna pray when the Spirit says pray,
And obey the Spirit of the Lord.

I’m gonna shout when the Spirit says shout,
I’m gonna shout when the Spirit says shout,
I’m gonna shout when the Spirit says shout,
And obey the Spirit of the Lord.
(Traditional)

Music notes

If Ye Love Me was composed in 1990 for the treble section leads at Fairlawn – also affectionately known as “El’s Angels”!    It was first performed on Sunday, May 27, 1990 by Yvonne Way, Carrie Loring, Meredith Hall and Patricia Jones, and this morning’s recording features the same 4 voices.

Bianco de Siena (c.1350-1434) was an Italian mystic poet. He wrote many religiously-inspired poems that were widely read in the Middle Ages. Over one hundred and twenty-two of his poems were published, spanning more than twenty thousand lines of verse. The Irish born curate Richard F. Littledale translated many of these poems into English that have since come into common use in the church, including Come Down, O Love Divine (known as “Discendi, Amor Sante” in Italian.)

Richard F. Littledale (1833-1891) was born in Dublin. He graduated first class in classics and divinity at Trinity College Dublin, and then continued his studies at Oxford. Although he was curate of two churches in England, he suffered from chronic ill-health for much of his life, and so took little part in any parochial duties, devoting himself mainly to writing and translating.

K. (Keaton) Lee Scott (b. 1950) is an internationally known teacher, conductor and composer of sacred music, choral music and hymns, currently residing in Birmingham, Alabama. Recognized as one of America’s foremost composers of music for the church, his hymns are published in eight hymnals, including Voices United. He has over 300 compositions in publication, including anthems, hymns, works for solo voice, organ, brass, and larger choral works. Scott holds degrees in choral music and composition from the University of Alabama School of Music, and has travelled extensively as a guest conductor and clinician throughout the United States, as well as to Canada and Africa. In years past, the Senior Choir has presented the Canadian premiere of his Gloria, and the Toronto premiere of his Requiem.

Thomas T. Lynch (1818-1871) was a British minister and hymn-writer. A cultured musician, he was also the author of several prose works, which included lectures, addresses, sermons, controversial tracts and magazine articles.

John Cosin (1594-1672) was an English Anglican bishop, theologian, and liturgist whose scholarly promotion of traditional worship, doctrine, and architecture established him as one of the fathers of Anglo-Catholicism in the Church of England. His literary influence played a leading part in the 1662 revision of The Book of Common Prayer.

Martin Åsander (b. 1987) is a Swedish singer, instrumentalist, and composer of both choral and orchestral music, currently choir director and organist at Immanuel Church in Stockholm. His composition Peace sets a verse from the Gospel of John, in which Jesus promises peace to his disciples beyond the peace of this world. Åsander wrote it in 2014, partly in tribute to Norwegian composer Knut Nystedt who died that same year.

Christopher Wordsworth (1807-1885) was a nephew of the great poet, William Wordsworth. He was educated at Winchester and Trinity College, Cambridge, was elected Fellow of the College in 1830, and received Priest’s Orders in 1835. He held many distinguished posts over the course of his life, including head master of Harrow School, Canon of Westminster Abbey, Hulsean Lecturer at Cambridge; Vicar of Stanford-in-the-Vale, Archdeacon of Westminster, and Bishop of Lincoln. His writings are numerous and some of them very valuable. He wrote many volumes of sermons and an enormous amount of pamphlets, addresses, letters and speeches, on almost every subject in which the interests of the church were concerned, as well as on subjects connected with classical literature.

Howard Helvey (b. 1968) resides in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he is active as a composer, arranger and pianist, and serves as organist and choirmaster at the historic Calvary Episcopal Church. Nationally and internationally he is in frequent demand as a composer, conductor, and speaker. Known particularly for his choral music, his hundreds of compositions and arrangements have been featured on numerous recordings, national television and radio broadcasts, in such eminent venues as New York’s Carnegie Hall, the Walt Disney Concert Hall (LA), Chicago’s Orchestra Hall, the White House, the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., and many locations throughout Europe and Asia. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in composition from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a Master of Music degree in composition and piano performance from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music.
