Pentecost Spirit Art in Pride Flag Colours

PRELUDE My Love Colours Outside the Lines             Gordon Light (1995)

OPENING HYMN Come, Holy Ghost, Our Souls Inspire             Music: 9th century plainsong melody

Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire
And lighten with celestial fire,
Thou the anointing Spirit art,
Who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart.

Thy blessèd unction from above
Is comfort, life and fire of love;
Enable with perpetual light
The dullness of our blinded sight.

Anoint and cheer our soilèd face
With the abundance of thy grace;
Keep far our foes; give peace at home:
Where thou art guide no ill can come.

Teach us to know the Father, Son,
And thee of both to be but one,
That through the ages all along
This may be our endless song.

Praise to thy eternal merit,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
(from the Latin 9th century,
trans. John Cosin, 1594-1672)

SOLO You Will Be Known (from Dear Evan Hansen)             Music and Lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul
Tenor – Kevin Doe
Piano – Eleanor Daley

Have you ever felt like nobody was there?
Have you ever felt forgotten in the middle of nowhere?
Have you ever felt like you could disappear?
Like you could fall, and no one would hear?

Well, let that lonely feeling wash away
Maybe there’s a reason to believe you’ll be okay
‘Cause when you don’t feel strong enough to stand
You can reach, reach out your hand

And oh, someone will come running
And I know, they’ll take you home
Even when the dark comes crashing through
When you need a friend to carry you
And when you’re broken on the ground
You will be found

So let the sun come streaming in
‘Cause you’ll reach up and you’ll rise again
Lift your head and look around
You will be found

CLOSING HYMN Draw the Circle Wide             Gordon Light (1994)

Draw the circle wide.
Draw it wider still.
Let this be our song,
no one stands alone,
Standing side by side,
Draw the circle wide.

God the still-point of the circle,
‘Round whom all creation turns:
Nothing lost, but held forever,
In God’s gracious arms.

Draw the circle wide.
Draw it wider still.
Let this be our song,
no one stands alone,
Standing side by side,
Draw the circle wide.

Let our hearts touch far horizons,
So encompass great and small;
Let our loving know no borders,
Faithful to God’s call.

Let the dreams we dream be larger,
Than we’ve ever dreamed before,
Let the dream of Christ be in us,
Open every door.

Draw the circle wide.
Draw it wider still.
Let this be our song,
no one stands alone,
Standing side by side,
Draw the circle wide.
(Gordon Light, 1994)

 Music Notes

GORDON LIGHT (b. 1944) was born in Alberta, but as the son of an Air Force family, lived in many places growing up. He attended Carleton University in Ottawa, and Trinity College in Toronto. Ordained as a deacon and priest in 1969, he served parishes in Alberta and British Columbia before moving to Toronto in 1992 to serve as Principal Secretary to the Primate. Returning west in 2001, he was Administrative Assistant to the Metropolitan of BC and the Yukon, and then consecrated bishop for the Anglican Parishes of the Central Interior (formerly Cariboo). Retired since 2010, among other hobbies, a longtime passion of Light’s has been song-writing.

JOHN COSIN (1594-1672) was an English Anglican bishop, theologian, and liturgist whose scholarly promotion of traditional worship, doctrine, and architecture established him as one of the fathers of Anglo-Catholicism in the Church of England. His literary influence played a leading part in the 1662 revision of “The Book of Common Prayer”.

Known almost exclusively for the rock opera Rent – one of the longest-running Broadway musicals of all time, JONATHAN LARSON (1960-1996) was a composer, lyricist, playwright, and actor with a rousing, emotive songwriting style. His 1996 adaptation of the book ‘Scènes de la Vie de Bohème’ and Puccini’s opera La Bohème featured artist characters from multiple marginalized groups as they negotiated life in Manhattan’s East Village of the early 1990s. On the morning of the first off-Broadway preview of Rent in January 1996, Larson died of an undiagnosed heart problem. The show opened on Broadway that April, and ran for over 12 years, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and four Tonys, including Best Musical. A 2005 film adaptation of Rent made chorus highlight “Seasons of Love” a Top 40 hit.
