Featuring material from the book: How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen by David Brooks, as well as several video interviews with the author and of course our own lived experience. His book is a practical, heartfelt guide to the art of truly knowing another person in order to foster deeper connections at home, at work, and throughout our lives.
It is not necessary to have read the book but Jean assures that it is well worth getting a copy. Jean will provide weekly material to read, questions to ponder and always some poetry as well to help us in our conversation.
As David Brooks observes, “There is one skill that lies at the heart of any healthy person, family, school, community organization, or society: the ability to see someone else deeply and make them feel seen—to accurately know another person, to let them feel valued, heard, and understood.”
Register and join us in what promises to be a lively conversation about the importance of good questions, heartfelt listening and the value of being truly known.
Christian Meditation
Continuing in the fall on Wednesdays at 7:30 pm, we gather online for Christian Meditation. If you have not participated before, please email the moderator, Patrick Sullivan, at before the meeting to get the Zoom login. He can add you to his email distribution list for login information.
Men’s Group
On the first Monday of each month (except July and August), men can join the Men’s Group for a time of comraderie and discussion. The wide-ranging conversations offer men a chance to discuss issues of mutual interest.
Women’s Spirituality
We have two women’s spirituality groups where women meet monthly (except July and August) to contemplate life’s questions and support each other. For information or if you have questions, please contact .
Baptism in the United Church is recognized by all denominations of the Christian church that practise infant baptism. Similarly, if people have already been baptized in another church, the United Church recognizes their baptism and welcomes them as Christians. At Fairlawn we celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism at several specially designated services throughout the year, during our Sunday church service at 10:30 am.
Fairlawn performs all marriages allowed by the Ontario government, including same-sex marriages. Our staff will consult with you on how we can help you celebrate your cultural and spiritual background for this special occasion. Ministry staff perform marriage ceremonies within the church building and offsite. Consultation with the staff to celebrate each couple’s culture and spiritual background is encouraged.
At some point in our lives, we will be faced with planning a funeral or memorial service for a loved one. Fairlawn Avenue United Church is here to help you through the process.

Fairlawn Remembers
From March 2020 to May 2022, public health guidelines prevented us from gathering to celebrate the lives of congregants and their family members who had passed away. They were honoured in Fairlawn Remembers, an online site of tributes. Now that we are once again able to come together to commemorate lives once lived, we will not be adding further pages. Sincere thanks to Barb Steep for coordinating this initiative.
