Fill in the Clothing Checklist

• Duffel Bag*
  • One duffel or hockey bag. Everything you bring should fit in this bag. This bag is to simplify travel from your home to Northwaters and make it easier to identify you when you arrive at the airport, bus terminal or in Temagami. It will not be going on trail with you. We will provide a special canoe pack for you to pack your gear in at base camp.

• Avoid cotton for cold water paddling– Cotton is very cold when wet and takes a long time to dry.

  A note about clothing: whenever possible please try to bring clothing made from wool, synthetic fibers or polyester blends as opposed to cotton. Wool and synthetic fibers are more durable and keep you warmer than cotton when they are wet. Cotton can be very cold when wet, and takes a long time to dry.
• Clothing - Check each item you are bringing*
  • 1 durable water bottle, 1 litre capacity (available at most outdoor stores)
  • 4 pairs underwear (more or less; you decide)
  • 1 pair long underwear (tops and bottoms; synthetic fiber or polyester blend -- NOT cotton)
  • 3 pairs of warm wool socks
  • 2 pairs of cotton socks
  • 1 pair of shorts (light weight & durable)
  • 2 long sleeve shirts (synthetic fiber or polyester blend; NOT cotton)
  • 3 T-shirts
  • 3 pairs of pants (proper fitting, light weight and durable. Avoid jeans on the canoe trip (one pair is OK for travel) as they are heavy and difficult to dry. Again, wool, synthetic fiber or a polyester blend is best. Please avoid pants which are way too large)
  • 1 belt
  • 1 swimsuit
  • 1 hat with brim
  • 1 wool or fleece hat
  • 2 cotton bandannas
  • 1 heavy woolen shirt or fleece jacket (fleece is better as it dries faster)
  • 1 travel towel (not a bulky cotton beach towel)
  • 1 set of rain gear (jacket and pants, no ponchos please)
  • 1 pair UV rated sunglasses
  • 1 flashlight with extra batteries
  • 1 compact sleeping bag (rated for 5 degrees c or lower -- not a bulky cotton sleeping bag)
  • 1 toothbrush, toothpaste, other personal items
• Footwear - For your comfort and safety, you must have TWO pair of shoes*
  • One WET pair for water (will be worn throughout the day while on trail. They will be getting wet and possibly muddy. Please bring shoes that you don’t mind getting wet and dirty, but ones that will also give you ample support while portaging—worn hiking boots/shoes or sneakers would be fine.)
  • One DRY pair for walking around camp (will be worn on trail, at the end of the day and while hiking. They should be sneakers or hiking boots with ankle support.)
  Please note: Tevas, or sandals of any kind, are dangerous on the trail. They will not be accepted as a substitute for trail footwear.

  • Fishing tackle (rod should be carried in a plastic tube)
  • Creative hobby (e.g., beading, knitting, braiding, harmonica, etc.)
  • A book to read
  • Compact Therma-rest or sleeping pad
  • Small day-pack or dry bag to carry items you might want access to during the day (camera, sunblock, jacket, etc.)
