Rev. Jean Ward ~ A Farewell Gathering

    Featured Sunday, Jun. 23, 2024 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm
Fairlawn Avenue United Church 28 Fairlawn Avenue, Toronto, Toronto, Canada

As you know, Rev. Jean Ward’s time with Fairlawn is coming to a close. We celebrate Jean with a party after service on Sunday, June 23 at 11:30am. We want to send her off with special memories and invite you write a message to Jean. Perhaps you recall a story that illustrates what her time at Fairlawn has meant to you, or how she has enriched our community of faith, maybe you remember a funny anecdote, or simply wish to write words of thanks. Please take some time before the celebration on June 23 to write your thoughts in a card or letter. We will have a Memory Box at Jean’s farewell where you can deliver your special message. If you are unable to attend the celebration, you can either place your note in the Memory Box in the church office after June 10 or put it in the mail addressed to Joanne Christie and the words ‘Memory Box’ on the back of the envelope.

Congregational Meeting ~ Sunday, December 8 following worship service In 2019 the Shining Waters Regional Council of the United Church of Canada was formed to provide support for Ministry Personnel and Faith Communities. Earlier this year, at the request of delegates from Fairlawn Avenue United Church, the Region was asked to develop a strategic plan for all of the communities of faith. The Region agreed to do this, reporting twice, in October of this year and June of next year, before presenting that plan in October of 2025. A simplistic survey was circulated by the Regional Executive that, in our opinion, dodges the responsibility of creating that strategic plan. It does not address allocation of resources, including finances. There is no immediate impact on Fairlawn but it does impact ministry in our Communities of Faith, particularly in the GTA (e.g., Saint Luke's). We would like to take this out to other churches, creating momentum for change. Our request to Fairlawn is that you endorse this wider action and provide some insight we can, collectively, take to the Region. This may or may not include a recommendation that we communicate to the Region that they need to resource this process properly, perhaps even the dedication two staff to do this work.

Land Acknowledgement. Fairlawn acknowledges the sacred land on which our church stands. It has been a site of human activity for 15,000 years. This land is the territory of the Huron, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the New Credit River. The territory was the subject of the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Iroquois Confederacy and Confederacy of the Ojibwe and allied nations to peaceably share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. Today, the meeting place of Toronto is still home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island, and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work in the community, on this territory. We are also mindful of broken covenants and the need to strive to make right with all our relations. The original nations continue to cry out for justice. As treaty people, we commit to listen, learn, and work toward justice and reconciliation.
