    Senior’s Ministry ~ Discussion Series

    Featured May 5 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm Recurring
Fairlawn Avenue United Church 28 Fairlawn Avenue, Toronto, Toronto, Canada

On-site discussion series for seniors, designed to bring people together in person for meaningful conversation, laughter, and learning. These gatherings will continue the spirit of the Tuesday Lunch Crowd—welcoming, inclusive, and engaging—while creating new opportunities to connect face-to-face. Topics will be interesting, accessible, and fun, shaped around shared experiences, curiosity, and community. Whether you’re a longtime participant or new to the group, you’ll be warmly welcomed. Topics and Guest Speakers to be confirmed. Tuesday, March 10 2:00pm - 4:00pm Actor, Director and Teacher Scot Denton reflect on his question: “Acting? Why would you want to do that?”.  Scot will share the best times and misadventures during his career of trying to interpret other peoples' stories. Tuesday, April 14 2:00pm - 4:00pm Gary Schlee, for more than a decade, shared local history stories in Fairlawn’s Community Life newspaper. He will takes us on a virtual tour that explores present-day parts of the ‘hood’ and what was there in earlier times. Together, we will “flash back” to when the neighbourhood had a toll gate, Loblaws was on the west side of Yonge, Melrose boasted an impressive pillared entranceway, there was a bridge alongside Blessed Sacrament School, and Fairlawn held services in a barroom. Wednesday, April 29 2:00pm - 4:00pm Our guest speaker, Ebrahim Alia, Program Coordinator Rainbow Seniors at Lansing United, is a technology specialist. He has a background in digital media, technology training, and delivers workshops and presentations on technology, social media, and digital tools, helping people understand technology in a simple and practical way. Join us and learn how Al works and how to turn your ideas into pictures. No technical skills are needed. Tuesday, May 5 2:00pm - 4:00pm Join resident author, Gord Pitts and learn from his book showing how the past can inform our current reality. Scary Harry, the Cheesemaker Assassin. It was a fractious time of vast inequity and sharply polarized views, sparking an explosion of political violence in the U.S. But It was 1906, not 2026. Into this cauldron of class warfare stepped Harry Orchard — paid assassin and a former cheesemaker from the Ontario countryside east of Toronto. What are the lessons from his murderous rampage in an earlier Gilded Age? Gord Pitts discusses his new book.

Land Acknowledgement. Fairlawn acknowledges the sacred land on which our church stands. It has been a site of human activity for 15,000 years. This land is the territory of the Huron, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the New Credit River. The territory was the subject of the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Iroquois Confederacy and Confederacy of the Ojibwe and allied nations to peaceably share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. Today, the meeting place of Toronto is still home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island, and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work in the community, on this territory. We are also mindful of broken covenants and the need to strive to make right with all our relations. The original nations continue to cry out for justice. As treaty people, we commit to listen, learn, and work toward justice and reconciliation.
