Moose Hide Campaign Day National Rally

Moose Hide Campaign Day National Rally

    Featured May 14 @ 11:00 am - 1:30 pm
    Off-site , Canada

Moose Hide Campaign Day National Rally ~ Thursday, May 14 11:00am The United Church of Canada issued the following invitation to its members and the faith communities to which they belong. As we approach May, The United Church of Canada calls on members, friends, and communities of faith to take a clear stance against racism and for justice. We are inviting our Ontario regions to lead the way by joining us in person for the Moose Hide Campaign Day National Rally at Queen’s Park in Toronto on Thursday, May 14. The Moose Hide Campaign is more than a day; it is a mobilization against the ongoing national crisis of violence facing Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQIA+ people. Indigenous women, who make up just 5 percent of the female population, are disproportionately affected by gender-based violence in Canada. These are not just statistics. This is a reality we cannot ignore. Join us at Queen’s Park. If you are in Southern Ontario, we encourage your community of faith to join us on the grounds of the Ontario Legislature from 12:00pm to 1:30pm for the national rally. The United Church of Canada contingent will be meeting at the southeast corner of the park, near Queen’s Park Crescent East and Wellesley Street West at 11:45am. Hide pins, which you can wear as often as you want, to show your concern and solidarity, are available from Nigel on Sunday, May 10 at our worship service. There is no cost for these pins. As the Campaign organizers say these pins are ‘medicine’, in the traditional understanding of Canada’s Indigenous people. They are given, not bought, for all medicine is a gift from Creator. Feel free though to make a donation to The Moose Hide Campaign by way of acknowledging the medicine gift. Jean and Nigel invite you to meet them at the North East (down escalator) entrance to the Lawrence Subway Station at 11:00am journeying to join other United Church folk to take a clear stance against racism and for justice. Learn more about the Moose Hide Campaign.

Land Acknowledgement. Fairlawn acknowledges the sacred land on which our church stands. It has been a site of human activity for 15,000 years. This land is the territory of the Huron, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the New Credit River. The territory was the subject of the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Iroquois Confederacy and Confederacy of the Ojibwe and allied nations to peaceably share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. Today, the meeting place of Toronto is still home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island, and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work in the community, on this territory. We are also mindful of broken covenants and the need to strive to make right with all our relations. The original nations continue to cry out for justice. As treaty people, we commit to listen, learn, and work toward justice and reconciliation.
